Dark Day

Dark Day - on the Winter Solstice(The Winter Solstice occurs in just over a week - a few days before Christmas.)

The solstice of winter may darken our mood.
Dear sun slips away, and the Yule nights intrude.
‘Mid holiday sport,
Our days become short.
We stand, most appalled, as our neighbors turn rude.

Brisk wind chills our souls as the season begins,
And icy barbs fall on us, needles and pins.
Still, weather may pale,
Regardless of gale,
Compared to the numbness deep under our skins.

However, as soon as the briefest day’s passed,
The hope of light grows in the midwinter blast.
Fair skies may appear
If we wait till next year.
‘Ere long may the promise bring joy unsurpassed.

Hark! A Spark!

Hark! A Spark!

"Is not God in the heights of heaven?
And see how lofty are the highest stars!

Slip from sight
To catch a glance –
All is right
Regarding chance.
Gesture higher;
Angels smile.
Zeal inspired
In a while.
Night brings even
Glints of Heaven.

Not Enough –
A Limericked Plea for Ecology
(for Earth Day)

Fourteen trashbags aren’t enough,
No matter if we huff and puff.
One day may fall,
A wake-up call,
But still we try to overstuff.

This hardy orb may spin along,
As we indulge, both right and wrong.
Are we deceived
By oaths believed?
Could we be writing our swan song?

Perhaps we’ll topple ten more trees
To clear a path for our own ease.
Hey, they’ll grow back
To fill the lack.
Of course, there are no guarantees.

Ecology is now in style.
It’s hip to be an eco-phile.
Earth Day each year,
Though cavalier,
We may recycle for a while.

But fourteen trashbags won’t suffice,
Although the sentiment is nice.
I do declare:
Let’s clear the air.
Could be our Earth Day’s too concise.
