Not Enough –
A Limericked Plea for Ecology
(for Earth Day)
Fourteen trashbags aren’t enough,
No matter if we huff and puff.
One day may fall,
A wake-up call,
But still we try to overstuff.
This hardy orb may spin along,
As we indulge, both right and wrong.
Are we deceived
By oaths believed?
Could we be writing our swan song?
Perhaps we’ll topple ten more trees
To clear a path for our own ease.
Hey, they’ll grow back
To fill the lack.
Of course, there are no guarantees.
Ecology is now in style.
It’s hip to be an eco-phile.
Earth Day each year,
Though cavalier,
We may recycle for a while.
But fourteen trashbags won’t suffice,
Although the sentiment is nice.
I do declare:
Let’s clear the air.
Could be our Earth Day’s too concise.

Definitely one of my favorite Earth Day poems! Great rhythm. And the proverb definitely fits.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing!
although our planet is burning up...your poem is very kewl...its very good
ReplyDeleteI think deeply about this too. I just don't want to make it worse than it is, even if i can't clean/clear it.
ReplyDeleteYeah, it all looks like too little too late - maybe we need Earth Day everyday, anyway...
ReplyDeleteI like the chain of Limerick, it's a cool way to get your message across.
The quote is loaded and it'll give me much to think about, I can feel a poem coming right n
o
w!
An apt piece - and the quote is one of the most important of eco-messages.
ReplyDeleteI think the Original Inhabitants got it right after all.
ReplyDeleteEARTH DAY
ReplyDeleteAtleast 1 day which whole heartedly pulls us towards the plight of her.
Lets just try it not to be a trashbag

I hope we can celebrate Earth day every day. This was a great poem to lead the charge.
ReplyDeleteReally enjoyed this poem in honor of Earth Day. Your critical eye is very perceptive and that last line is great... "too concise" is a good way to point how Earth Day has changed over the years.
ReplyDeleteWe should make Earth Day every day. Until we do, I don't know how much progress will be made.
