‘F’ is for . . . Food Fight

Fairly Fast Foods

Flying food may fill the air,
As little growing hands
Fling fish sticks, fries and other fare,
‘Mid faculty demands.

Forty freshmen hit the floor,
Fearing for their lives.
Fifty upperclassmen roar,
Passing ‘round high-fives.

Furious, the teachers call
For an end to fun –
Finding faulters, one and all,
Fleeing on the run.

Four upcoming Fridays spent,
In detention’s queue –
Finally, the guards relent:
“See you in a few!”

Dry Ice - A Limerick Penned on Engagement's End

Sometimes life simply isn't as rock solid as one might suppose.

Dry Ice
(A Limerick Penned on Engagement’s End)

Her jewelry faded in her hand;
‘Twas crafted in a foreign land.
When he proposed,
‘Ere she supposed,
Engagement wasn’t all she’d planned.

The Present

Posted for a variety of prompts:

E Is for . . . Extremism and Excellence

Ah! what is not a dream by day

To him whose eyes are cast

On things around him with a ray

Turned back upon the past?

From “A Dream” By Edgar Allan Poe 1809-1849

The Present

The victory and excellence

Belong most to the present tense.

A coin, flipped heads or tails, cannot

Move destiny to stronger spot.

The rules are pure and plain, my dear.

Though lawyers talk, they cannot hear.

In fact, the opposite occurs,

As fortune settles and defers.

Then, bored, the experts face the drive,

To push and pull, but ne’er arrive.

The habit, echoes heretofore;

Pursuers profit nevermore.

The present is a joy, a gift,
And those who lose it pay short shrift.
Recalling and foretelling fail,
As life accelerates its tale.

To Trust or Bust

"Aim at Heaven,
and you will get earth thrown in.
Aim at earth.
and you get neither."

C.S. Lewis
(1898 - 1963)
Climbing walls without a stair,
Scrambling frantic towards nowhere -
Observations may deceive
Those unwilling to believe,
Lest we care enough to share.

Standing in the pouring rain,
Dreams descending down the drain -
Church bells sound an eerie knell,
Unknown truths no time can tell,
Lest our trials show them plain.

Ragged, frayed, a wedding dress,
Crumpled heap, a muddy mess -
Madness, like a mastiff, growls;
Mystery, unveiled, it prowls,
Lest we answer deep distress.

Rats a-running in one place,
Roaring as a stock-car race -
Crashing to the depths for more,
Rolling in the grimy gore,
Lest our lives reveal God's grace.

Will we claim contentment's call,
Thus rejecting know-it-all?
All it takes is all we are;
Still we leave the door ajar.
Thus, we waste the waterfall.

Blessings bountiful await,
When we loose our hold on fate.
Banishing banality,
Far beyond reality,
If we live before too late.

Back to School

Back to School –
A Poetic Pondering of Pricey Proportions

Tired parents, crabby kids,
Crowding aisles, flipping lids,
Dropping crayons on the floor,
"Mommy! Daddy! I want more!"

Filling up a shopping cart
At the mega-discount mart,
Racks up sales to make you spin
Or hire out your next-of-kin.

Kindergartners clutch their lists:
"Is there anything we've missed?"
Teens and middle schoolers roar,
"Why'd we come to this lame store?"

And yet, this errand is a boon,
For schools will ring their bells quite soon.
Parents gladly cough up funds
Because the summer break is done!

Don’t Smile at Me That Way
(A Rhyming Spin on the Inverted Grin)

We went out to the county fair,
And everyone in town was there.
The ferris wheel, the rides that scare,
And junk-food hawkers everywhere.

But nothing there could quite torment
Or frighten me to the extent
As what I saw and did lament,
When we passed by the bingo tent.

Alas, here is my tale of woe:
The folks were seated in a row,
And each one seemed to say, "Hello,"
With smiles that came from down below.

We strolled along behind their bench,
And it was not the livestock stench
That made my stomach muscles clench,
But all those butts along that bench.

I think I am a friendly sort,
And possibly, a real good sport,
But this just made my guts contort
To see so many glutes distort.

I wanted to shout, "Hoist those pants!"
To give my lunch a fighting chance,
Or maybe, "How 'bout underpants?"
But couldn't take a second glance.

We hurried to another space,
Potato sack or pony race,
Or just to find a happy face
Who'd wear a smile in the right place!

The Game of Peace

Athletic genius:
The world’s finest congregate.
For the Olympics.

Beginning the games,
Shelving hostilities here,
For two world-watched weeks.

Can it continue?
Could good sportsmanship carry
Past the final race?
