Titled, But Unbridled: A-Z verses from vintage visages

Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom marked her 90^th birthday on the 21^st of April this year. (The Queen’s Official Birthday celebration takes place later in the spring.) The following lines were somewhat inspired by a vintage photograph of Queen Elizabeth and her sister Princess Margaret, taken when they were young ladies in a costumed event.

Titled, But Unbridled

A Rhyming Reel on a Royal Ideal

There is only one bridge that leads in and out

Of ev’ry predicament, sole single route.

As terror or trial brings tempers to try,

She’ll dodge disappointment, new trail to set by.

“We trudge with no grudge, and we beat the beasts back

That trespass the pathways the people must track.

And though to entitlement we may be born,

We fear not such privilege treats us to scorn.

 “Intrepid, we rise and select our best togs.

We follow our principles, not demagogues.

Decorum may dictate the stroll we select;

We have to be more than the people expect.”

I cannot imagine the pressure unseen

To keep up the posture of princess or queen,

For she must be anything but Philistine.

Perhaps you have piles of parcels and trunks of trinkets and have procrastinated about putting them aside. Maybe you understand.

Packrat

Poking through a pile of crates,

Ancient treasures, gifted greats.

Contemplating what to toss,

Keeping diamonds, losing dross.

Recognizing heirloom’s bluff –

After all, enough’s enough.

Tomorrow I can stow this stuff.

In Greek mythology, Poseidon was the earth-shaking king of the sea.

(Poseidon’s counterpart in Roman mythology was Neptune.)

With his trident, Poseidon ruled the underwater realm, traveling with his horse and bull. Poseidon was regarded by ancient Greeks as one of the mightiest of all mythological gods.

Fancy Fishing

Poseidon was beside himself;

His heart had knocked him off the shelf.

A mermaid’s glance,

With eyes askance,

Reduced the water king to elf.

Amphibiosity desired,

Poseidon with the maid conspired.

He tipped his cup;

Then, swimming up,

The underwater tsar retired.

The moral here is damp, but sure:

Desire dangles danger’s lure.

On New Year’s Resolutions

Do you make New Year’s resolutions?

Many people vow, as a new year begins, to stop destructive habits, beat addictions, begin healthy practices and start new personal disciplines. Health clubs and fitness centers enjoy increased membership enrollments, as folks sign up for exercise programs. Weight loss centers usually have a bump in admissions as well, as the old year closes and the new year opens.

Folks promise themselves (and others) all sorts of things on New Year’s Eve, or even New Year’s Day.

How long do New Year’s resolutions last?

Have you ever kept a New Year’s resolutions all year long? What was it? Did you quit smoking, lose a few pounds, exercise daily, finish a major project, beat a bad habit, get a new job, read some new books, keep in touch with friends or family members, finish an academic degree, stop swearing, get rid of clutter in your home, drive within the posted speed limit, or what?

Here’s my New Year’s resolution for the coming year. Perhaps these words will resound with you as well:

Foretaste

Limericked Spins As New Year Begins

My new resolution is tragically hip.

Don’t mean to sound sassy, nor prideful or flip.

Still, making a vow

Right here and right now

Seems somehow preemptive to taking a trip.

No wanderlust draws me to dangers without,

And tasty temptations delicious I doubt.

But catching up leaves

And writing on sleeves

May lead to dynamics or creative drought.

Today, as our calendars all are replaced,

A full resolution I make not in haste.

As new bells may chime

The passage of time,

I seek to make memories – to taste and not waste.
