Gene Theory

Gene Theory

What makes a best-seller? Is it always a solid plot or excellent wordsmithing? Or may the secret occasionally be a choice of color?

A Little Off-Color

An infamous author named Gene
Pens words on the verge of obscene.
His musings, though blue,
Raise much ballyhoo.
Gene’s green, if you know what I mean.

Sometimes No Growth Is a Good Thing

-->
Sometimes No Growth Is a Good Thing

Often we speak of growth in positive terms. Maturity and personal growth are admirable aims. Economic growth is promising. Personal growth is good.

However, when we look at medical testing, a growth may be a scary thing indeed, as I recently discovered firsthand.

Actually, the whole thing was in my head.

The Tumor Is a Rumor
A Limericked Descent with All Best Intent

Of late, I awaited report,
The medical test result sort.
A thirty-day wait
At cancer’s dark gate
Left me seeking much prayer support.

Concentrically prearranged zones
Affect radiology tones.
Oncology nods
To find me at odds,
Refusing to echo their groans.

At last, all the numbers returned.
Pass word to all those still concerned:
The doctors let slip,
‘Twas merely a blip.
“The tumor’s a rumor,” I learned.

And now I am over the moon;
As doctors are changing their tune.
I sense greater bliss
Than any first kiss,
May God call me home none too soon.

As children head off for the start of the year,

The garden awaits with its colorful cheer.

Solace in Solstice

The September solstice arrives all too soon,

And hearts wax nostalgic for weekends in June.

But colors grow warm, though the mercury drop,

As earth tilts away from the sweet sun atop.

Out of the bark of a hundred dead trees,

My yellow rudbeckia takes its sweet ease.

Beside the bright blooms, hearty sedum stands tall

Awaiting the final arrival of fall.

The lily stems, bare, are beginning to bend,

Unknowing perhaps of the dark they portend.

Though silent, the sweet fragrant romance may last

Till every blossom does drop from the mast.

For life in our land may be fleeting at most;

The fairest of flowers must give up the ghost.

And yet still remains key persistence of trust

That death will give in to new life in spring’s gust.

The Heartless Soul

The Heartless Sole

Little Cowgirl

By Mary Davis – Artme

Used by permission.

The Boot Salute –

A Quatrain Mix for More Than Kicks

Some swashbucklers suppose they’re smart.

They act as friends, then break your heart.

Let language be most absolute –

No subtleties: give them the boot.

A friend more genuine, you know,

Will listen closely, toe to toe.

No languid promises unkept,

Nor boundaries yet overstepped.

May truth arise, that we discern

Which bonds to keep and which to burn.

Will we reboot and still remain

With those who will our friendship feign?

Kick up your heels. Do not delay.

Souls insincere may slip away.

For such, we need not ballyhoo.

Just whisper as you leave them, “Shoo!”
