Hat trick or treat

For Halloween masquerading, sometimes dare-ful includes being careful.

Hat trick or treat

The scariest costume’s a vision indeed.
Just try taking trails in a getup extreme.
It’s truly enough to make your eyes bleed.
You might even wish it was all a bad dream.

Simplicity’s handy, when crafting a look.
I’m not just a killjoy, but here’s my defense.
When going for candy, by hook or by crook,
You can’t hold a candle to good common sense.

As wee trick or treaters garb up and go out,
Let’s aim for a recipe, safe on the spot.
Designing a costume that’s tuned up to tout
May be quite ornate, but again, maybe not.

Pondering Placidity and Kick or Treat

Two poems in forms to face different storms.

Pondering placidity

Perhaps placidity is a far cry from passivity. Maybe it’s just a pause for a petite parcel of peace.

Pondering placidity

If peace is a river, then why are we tossed?
Like leaves in the current, we’re whirled, double-crossed.
I crave to be colorless, vapid, and bland –
If just for a moment. You must understand.
Undoubtedly, soon I would rise up and stretch.
I’d bring back my bouncy. My fervor I’d fetch.

We crowd, elbows jammed, as our times flow too fast.
Our joys are forgotten, our troubles broadcast.
Each shore that’s adjourning the spot where I stand
May be solid ground, but it’s not close at hand.
I wonder, how long till we come to a rest?
Perhaps it is time to put faith to the test.

Kick or treat – A tanka for the prank-a

Halloween still looms.

Decorations placed with care.

Mischief makers strike.

Down come the festive flounces.

Can we eat the candy now?

Thursday

The nonchalant haunt

Does this ring a bell, or how can you tell?

The nonchalant haunt

Just up the street, a structure stands,
Untouched for years by human hands.
The house on the hill
Brings many a chill,
As ev’ry night owl understands.

The peak-ed roof bears barb-ed teeth.
Three prickly pines lurk underneath.
Reality swoons,
As keening wind tunes.
The boldest their own wits bequeath.

The strongest sense no difference brings,
For every breeze gives shingles wings.
With trembles acute,
The solemn salute,
As sneakers suddenly sprout springs.

Some say weird wonders have appeared,
Or apparitions ill-revered.
A fast flash of light
Or creak in the night
Confirm what others long have feared.

One vacant house in any range
Elicits stories weird and strange.
Though nobody’s home,
Still, rumors may roam
Enough to bring our paths to change.
