Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss!

March 2 is the birthday of the late great Dr. Seuss. Although this popular children’s author passed away more than 10 years ago, his award-winning works have taken on lives of their own in the hearts of many generations of readers.

How many of us remember reading our first words aloud from one of these titles?

  • The Cat in the Hat
  • Fox in Socks
  • Go Dog Go
  • Green Eggs and Ham
  • The Grinch Who Stole Christmas
  • Happy Birthday to You
  • Hop on Pop
  • Horton Hears a Who
  • I Can Read with My Eyes Shut
  • If I Ran the Circus
  • If I Ran the Zoo
  • Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You?
  • Oh, the Places You’ll Go
  • Oh, the Thinks You Can Think
  • The Sneetches
  • Yertle the Turtle
  • You’re Only Old Once
  • and many more.

What’s your favorite Dr. Seuss book of all?

And how about those favorite television specials, based on many of these books? Is Christmas TV viewing complete without The Grinch?

Dr. Seuss supposedly pronounced his name to rhyme with “poise,” rather than “puce.” However, for the sake of some Seussian fun on this literary legend for little folk, let’s go with the Anglicized version.

Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss!

Happy birthday, Dr. Seuss.
What a world you did produce.
Rhyming comic on the loose,
You crafted humor most obtuse.

We love the tangled tales you spun –
Alliteration on the run
And words invented, just for fun
To teach us reading, one by one.

So thank you, Seuss, we miss you still.
We long for silly stories shrill
And whisper verses penned with skill
That twist and turn and tell and trill.

Today’s your day. We won’t forget.
We’ll weave a silly rhymed vignette.
We’ll tell a tale to show our debt
For appetite for words you’d whet.

A Golden Birthday Girl

A Golden Birthday Girl

Here’s a tribute to a special girl, who will celebrate her golden birthday this year … entering her teen years. Love to Lizzy-Lu – a horse-lover, friend to animals and can-do girl!

Lizzy-Lu
A Limericked Piece on a Growing-Up Niece

Until she came, I never knew
Another one like Lizzy-Lu.
This sprite refined,
One of a kind,
Is all her own, full through and through.

She tackles challenge like an ace,
While setting out a daunting pace.
Both fur and fins
Bring Lizzy grins
That set a smile on any face.

In pool or school, she makes her splash,
While secreting her candy stash.
With home of boys
And all that noise,
She faces life with her panache.

Transforming into grown-up girl,
Dear towhead tomboy with a twirl –
Take this descant
From loving aunt,
And greet what future may unfurl.

“Since my youth, O God, You have taught me,
and to this day I declare Your marvelous deeds.”

Happy Birthday, Dear Son

“Anbetung der Hirten,” by Gerard van Honthorst

"Let's go to Bethlehem

and see this thing that has happened,

which the Lord has told us about."

(Luke 2:15a, NIV)

Dear Son Divine of Christmas Time –

A Limericked Call to Give Our All

Between my fingers, spirit slips,

Like long-ago forgotten scripts.

Distractions: green and gold and red

Do ripple through my weary head

The truest Christmas to eclipse.

We echo carols, bon remark,

And pray to find a place to park.

Lord, focus us upon Your birth;

Your gift to recreate our worth,

Not some refurbished patriarch.

“When we were children,

we were grateful to those

who filled our stockings

at Christmas time.

Why are we not grateful

to God

for filling our stockings with legs?”
Gilbert K. Chesterton

British author

(1874 – 1936)

Sporty at Forty (Coming of Age with Limericks)

Sporty at Forty
(Coming of Age with Limericks)

I so adore my best friend Marge.
Whose big four-oh was looming large.
She called our gang,
And with a bang,
She met the day by taking charge.

My friend runs circles round her peers;
Her forty annums bring her cheers.
At bar and grill,
She’s carded still
For aging slower than her years.

To face the years courageously,
Perhaps a bit outrageously,
With forty winks
And great hi-jinks,
She’s aged most advantageously.

Ageless - A Leap Year Haiku

Words for a Gal With a Great Rationale

How does she do it?
She’s always so much younger.
Her Leap Year birthday.

CAPTION:

My friend is young and sweet,
And yet, beneath her feet,
She walks the wire,
Ever higher,
As the years repeat!

Licensed to Drive

Have a student driver in the home? Perhaps you remember your own driving test.

I swear, upon my driver's license, that this is a TRUE story!

Licensed to Drive -
A True Story in Rhyme,
But It Oughta Be a Crime!

My sixteenth birthday finally came.
With three ID's that bore my name,
I prayed not to be put to shame
And headed out, my card to claim.

Arriving at the DMV
To take my test and beg and plea,
An older dame waved, "Pardon me,"
And cut the line, ahead of me.

Her four-door Buick was a tank;
The rear-end bumper sagged and sank.
And, if I were completely frank,
She drove the thing just like a crank.

We sat in line and hoped to pass.
Her turn arrived; she hit the gas
And ran her car right through the glass,
Which shattered clear out to the grass.

Her Buick landed on one side;
The staff, they laughed until they cried.
The lady, certainly tongue-tied,
Was on-the-spot disqualified.

The testing clerk was unimpressed.
He wiped his eyes and called out, "Next."
And just in case you haven't guessed,
With flying colors, I passed my test!

(OK, so this wasn't yesterday . . . . but it's still a true story!)
