A Hybrid Pleads for Holiness

“I throw myself down in my chamber, and I call in and invite God and his angels thither, and when they are there, I neglect God and his angels, for the noise of a fly, for the rattling of a coach, for the whining of a door. . . . A memory of yesterday’s pleasures, a fear of tomorrow’s dangers, a straw under my knee, a noise in mine ear, a light in mine eye, an anything, a nothing, a fancy, a chimera in my brain, troubles me in prayer.”

The Chimera’s Calling –

A Poetic Gazing at an Experience Most Amazing

I’ve never aimed at fitting in,

As instantly I knew.

My doodles darted out and in,

As inspiration grew.

Still, joy surprises past all rights,

Incongruous, it grows.

Beyond the city lights and sights,

It sheds a gladsome glow.

As a chimera, hybrid born,

‘Twixt feral, fine and fair,

I will not utter words of scorn

For Him who meets me there.

Though fiercest frenzies shout my name,

Inviting me to ire,

An inner calling draws its claim

And calls me ever higher.

  1. Linda,
This is great. The Donne quote made me think of Emily Dickenson, and then your poem itself did. Wonderful stuff. Thanks for sharing with OSI.

  3. Your title is amazing. This was a difficult theme to tackle-- the struggle of fitting in and faith-- but you have done well.
